what is educasians?
Immigrants tend to have worse health outcomes than U.S-born populations, arising from several factors: there has been long- standing mistrust towards the healthcare system, exacerbated by factors such as cultural differences, religious beliefs, and communication barriers. In Asian immigrant communities in particular, Hepatitis B infections and liver cancer cause deaths at disproportionate rates.
EducAsians is a project dedicated to curating health curricula using English as Second Language (ESL) as a platform, in order to disseminate important health information and resources without language barriers. The lesson plan is a joint effort between teachers and students in ESL programs in the Greater Boston area and our academic partners at Tufts, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Massachusetts General Hospital. In May 2021, we successfully piloted our Hepatitis B lesson to 200 students.
Asian Women for Health was awarded a COVID-19 community grant by Health Resources in Action (HRiA) to disseminate helpful COVID-19 resources. We are in the process of developing a COVID-19 vaccine lesson plan (both beginners and intermediate/advanced level). These lessons will be piloted by our existing ESL partner organizations. Our next step is to train volunteer ESL instructors to teach these lesson plans and pair them with organizations who serve immigrant populations that may not currently have the resources and staff to carry out these lesson plans.
Ultimately, our vision for the EducAsians project is to improve health literacy by sustaining these programs in existing community organizations.
